I went the weekend without a phone. I figured I’d do my blog post on that considering we discuss how technology is our life and the way we utilize it. Not having a phone was actually super refreshing. I didn’t feel like I needed to stay in contact with the world. Although It was also an inconvenience. my money from work was on an APP ! So not having a phone I couldn’t transfer money from the app to my bank account because the website doesn’t allow you to do that. Only through the app. I was broke during the weekend ! That’s the worst. When I was going to work, I needed to see what time the trains came, That was also an inconvenience because I was late to work due to train delays over the weekend. I also needed a map to get to a certain destination over the course of the weekend and because I didn’t have a phone in my hand, I had to figure out other ways to get to where I had to go. The worst part of all, I literally could’t listen to music. That made me the saddest.

 

That’s how my weekend went with out my phone.

After watching the poet, I really feel as if I could relate. Technology has allowed us to become dependent in how we function and communicate with one another.  Our phones have allowed us to build and keep relationships with people across the world where we can watch them grow up and live from a distance, from our screens. The way we process our thoughts and ideas, we write them down in our phones. We create these apps that allow us to be organized. Technology can speak to us, resend to us, answer our questions, help us with our thoughts.

Q: Raised in class: What does computer technology do for you ? 

Computer technology allows me to post this blog post. It allows me to get my homework done, keep track of my everyday life and feel like I have it together even If I may not. Computer technology provides a sense stability for people in today’s society. When we think about everything we have access to on  computer Ex: a Calendar, When we clock in and out of work, ordering food from our hands, shopping online, keeping yourself organized, emails, ideas, videos, books online, music apps on computers , the ability to share your computer screen to your tv screen. It’s instant, its effective, it’s efficient. It allows our lives to run a lot smoother. 

I focused my oral history project on a transcript interview with a young lady named Brittney Maya. Brittney discussed the struggles of being a young woman with disabilities and being a relationship with a partner with disabilities. Brittney also talked about her future with her boyfriend.  Translating the transcript at times was a bit hard. Due to the fact some of the phrases or words were incomplete. I wasn’t sure in which direction the conversation was going. There were moments I had to read the rest of the conversation to make sure I was interpreting what was being said accordingly enough to re-phrase it. There were times where it felt as if during the conversation they couldn’t finish there thoughts. Even at times where they were cutting each other’s sentences off. Verifying was easier for me. Due to the fact, I could just simply pick which options I felt would sound best in certain sentences. Also Some things indivisuals already transcribed, I felt as if the other person didn’t make sense. I wanted to go back in and edit it but I was unable too. The process felt easy at first and became a little difficult because If I transcribed something or even verified it, I thought about how someone else might come and interpret the sentence or what if they were to get confused. 

The Reading I decided to go For was Cyborg Manifesto By Donna Haraway. I found it interesting the points this article touched  Post gender in a Feministic world, and transgression in the boundaries between human and animal connection. Between humans and living creatures in the worlds. Haraway gets more depth the boundary between physical and non physical and how electronics devices are everywhere. I enjoyed how the cyborg embraces technology and tries not to Categorize it by exploring different boarders between the two non physical and physical. A Question that I raise though is How do we decide that her theory creates open mind to what it means to be human and machine ?

We don’t ever think too much in how an email is constructed today. We focus on just sending it out and receiving. Not understanding how the concept of emailing came about. The thought of transporting communication through a telegraph and through out time turning telegraphs into emails. Understand that your able to construct  an email in personally and professionally  and the person on the other end can receive it instantly and have an option to reconstruct your message on their end.

The idea of Society not being able to function without email today is hilarious. We work off of emails, School emails, Personal Emails, Entertainment emails, Spam emails, We even need our emails to get discounts ! It’s a concept that allows to us to function.

As we read further about how technology has advanced and became part of society’s everyday living, the reading looks at how technology should be organized or how the information on technology is organized, the way I look at this is the iPhone for example, an ever advancing device. That stores our everyday information. We have hundreds of apps that allow us to organize our time, scheduled our events , travel, communicate with others, shop online and now i store with Apple Pay. We literally have our whole lives stored in one device. Our bank accounts doctor appointments, even our work. As I think more into it, we HAVE to even pay for more storage ! For our music pictures, documents the more we need to store the more we have to pay !
